Biodiversity
Most temperate deciduous forests have a very high biodiversity. This is because the biome has a very high density of plant life. This high density forest contains a large number of deciduous trees which then enables a large number of animal species. Species diversity is defined as the number of species in a particular region.
The Appalachian Mountains are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. Biodiversity is extremely high in terms of both the variety of different species and the abundance of each species. About 10,000 species are already known to exist here and more are discovered each year. Many of these species in this region are found nowhere else in the world. The reasons why that biodiversity is so high in the Appalachian Mountains is because of the ice age glaciers moving species, topagraphy

Benefits of Biodiversity
Ecotourism describes environmentally responsible travel to protected natural areas for the purpose of appreciating nature, promoting conservation, and providing economic benefits to local people. Temperate forests and especially areas like the Appalachian Mountains have many trails and guided trails for tourists to walk through and enjoy. These trails provide a nature experience and also helps promote economic development in those regions.
Biodiversity Risks
Habitat fragmentation - Air pollutants from fuels we burn are destroying forests, killing our wildlife and poisoning the soil. Millions of acres of forests have suffered from the effects of acid rain. It damages their leaves and causes production of smaller fruit and less seeds used in reproduction. Even slight damage to trees can easily kill them because it reduces their resistance to frost, fungi, and deadly diseases and pests. Clearing land for use in agriculture and clear cut logging have destroyed and continue to destroy millions of trees.
What can I do to Help?
Use fewer products that come from trees. This will result in less logging and save forests and wildlife habitat.
Plant trees around your area or join a group that plants in certified areas.
Next time you buy lumber, furniture, or other wood products, look for a FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label. It signifies that the wood came from trees grown in well-managed, independently certified forests.
RECYCLE and buy recycled and reusable products
Don’t print when it’s not necessary, write or print on both sides of your paper when it is
